Why do you think your character would work in this setting?

He likes new adventures and new things, so even though he's showing up unwillingly, it will eventually become a new adventure for him. Finding out that Emma's in the same place would calm him down a lot, too. Settling down with Emma is what he wants, and it doesn't much matter where that settling happens. This is a new town for him to find his place in.

How do you plan to expand their CR?

He's a social creature, who loves going new places and meeting new people. Which is exactly the kind of thing that he would do here.

What will your character do for work?

He would like to take over ownership of the boat rental place again, like last time he was here.

Personality overview: Even though he is a pirate and takes pleasure in everything that life brings him, he considers himself a gentleman. It's not like he was born a pirate, after all, and as such he has a code of honor that he follows though this code does get derailed quite a bit during his quest for vengeance. Even he has his limits. It was his brother's death that drove him to become a pirate; he realized that he could no longer serve a dishonorable king. He didn't adopt the lifestyle because it appealed to him. He even seems to hold in contempt those who focus simply on the baser aspects of being a pirate, such as Blackbeard.

Some might consider some of the things he does to be cruel, such as his treatment of Smee, but they're not. He has certain rules, and he expects those rules to be followed, by every member of his crew. They're like a family, and the actions of one reflect on the others. All of the loyalty that they give to him, he has earned, by being fair to the crew when he needs to be, and he returns that loyalty to them. When he made the decision to turn pirate, he gave every man on the crew the option to leave if they didn't agree, and every one of them stayed with him.

If he's betrayed, however, or his trust is broken, he will act quickly and without mercy. When Rumpelstiltskin killed the woman he loved, it took three hundred years for his anger to abate enough for him to be able to agree to a truce. That anger is still there though, bubbling just beneath the surface, for the justice that Milah never got and everything that Gold has going for him despite all that he's done.

He's not typically a violent person, but if he feels backed into a corner, he'll fight his way out. He can be patient, given the proper motivation, but generally if something bores him, he'll move on to something or somewhere else. He's the charming sort, able to talk (or flirt) his way out of just about anything. It is how he has survived for so long, after all. He's confident, some might say too confident, and he's got a bit of an ego. That ego never really goes away, but when he makes a meaningful connection with someone, he'll start to show them some of the pain underneath.

The first truly defining moment in his life was the death of his brother Liam. Liam was his captain, and his older brother, and the only family he had left in the world. Dealing with Liam's death would have been difficult under any circumstances, but it was even more difficult because not only did he lose his brother, he lost trust in the man he had sworn to serve. He found himself facing a difficult decision: continue to serve the man who had proven his dishonor and cost the life of someone close to him, or break the vow he had sworn. It's all about good form with him, and he decided that it was better form to refuse to serve a man who would deny his enemies a fair fight. In one moment he has lost his innocence and naivete and learned not to trust the world as a whole. It's a lesson he's still feeling the effects of all these years later.

He lost his adherence to good form after the death of Milah. He became driven entirely by his desire for revenge, and every decision he made was with the goal of achieving it. For all that time in Neverland, and up until the moment when he realized he hadn't gotten his revenge after all, he lost sight of who he truly was. He came to realize that getting his revenge wasn't worth his own life, and some of that was connected to Emma. He had slowly been discovering that there were things he wanted in his life again, and if he wasted it searching for revenge, he'd never get the things he truly wanted. This is the realization that gives him a new motivation for making decisions: Emma.

He takes action based on what's best for Emma, or on what Emma would want him to do. It might be the right thing to do, but he's not doing it to be a hero. He's doing it for Emma's sake. He doesn't even think of himself as a hero. He's a former villain who's trying to figure out what sort of man he is now. He hasn't quite figured it out yet, and he still struggles with the temptation to return to his old habits, but is able to get past them with a gentle reminder of everything he's got going for him now.

He starts to get some of his trust in the world back during his time in Storybrooke. He still doesn't trust Gold as much as the rest of the group seems to, but after Gold took the most important person from him and they've tried to kill each other multiple times, that's a rift that won't be repaired. He does put his trust in Emma though, and by extension the rest of her family, and Regina. It's a slow process, and while he's not sure he'd trust David or Mary Margaret to give any thought to his interests, he at least has figured out how to trust them not to let him die, even if this is because they wouldn't let anyone die, not because they'd go out of their way to save his life. He might not automatically trust anyone he meets, but he is trusting new people easier than he used to, and is getting better about earning their trust in return.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

What skills does your character bring to the situation?: He has many years of experience as a sea captain, which encompasses a good number of skills. Aside from the expected, such as leadership and the ability to delegate, are skills that might be overlooked. His skill at navigation includes advanced math and basic astronomy, the ability to read a map and the ability to create a code so that no one else can read his charts. He also has several skills he picked up before he worked his way up to captain, involving all aspects of sailing, from basic carpentry to repairing nets to fishing. He is, by his own admission, a “hell of a captain.” Most of his years at sea have been as a pirate, so he is also a skilled thief and can spin a good lie when necessary. This means he can also detect when someone else isn't being entirely truthful.

Explain how your character would react to the following:

- Discovering that their memories may have been tampered with: He has not had to deal with this one personally yet, but is aware of it happening with the curses to hit Storybrooke. He will dislike the idea of his memories being tampered with, for two reasons. First, the thought that there is someone out there powerful enough to do so, without permission and apparently without thought of how it affects those who are having it done to them. This is everything he dislikes about the use of magic as well. Whoever has tampered with his memories is powerful enough to do who knows what else, and he will be uncomfortable at that idea as well. Second, he will be upset at the idea that he might lose memories of those he cared about the most, or of the moments that have been the most important in his life. If he thinks someone is the person responsible for the loss of his memories, he's liable to get angry about it.

- Having to do physical labor to survive: This is something he's quite used to, even from when he became a captain and could delegate tasks to members of his crew. He still needed to pull his weight, after all. Over the years, especially in Neverland, his crew dwindled, and it was necessary for him to do more work on the ship. At least twice in the past, he has had no crew at all and had to sail the ship himself, which would have required an extensive amount of physical labor, which he accomplished with only one hand, no less. This may be different physical labor than he's used to, but he'll step up and do what needs to be done.

- Having to share resources with others: This is also something that he's used to, from his years as a sailor. The ship could only carry a set amount of food and water along with its other cargo, and every man on board got only a certain amount of rations. Even as the captain he would not have gotten more rations than other members of the crew, although they may sometimes have been better quality. In Neverland as well, both with his crew and when he was there with Emma and her family, any food they caught, killed, or scavenged would have had to be shared among the group. Sharing resources may not be something he has to do all the time anymore, but he has experienced it in the past.

- Being unable to leave the area: This will be the toughest part to adjust to. He was the captain of a pirate ship for so many years that he could decide when they would leave somewhere and where they would go. Giving up that ability will be a difficult adjustment for him, not just because he's not used to staying in one place but because he likes having that bit of control. Even when he didn't have this ability in Storybrooke, because he didn't have a ship, he was in that situation willingly. He also could still leave the town by some means other than his ship. Having the ability to choose to leave taken from him will chafe, but he's resilient and will carry on.

- Doing without modern conveniences and technology and/or being around tech more advanced than they're used to: This will not be a problem. Modern conveniences confuse him, and even if he knew how to use a GPS system, he would still prefer to navigate the old-fashioned way, with charts and stars and a sextant. He's used to living without electricity and conveniences like microwaves, and technology like cell phones and computers. Not having modern technology is exactly the kind of life he's used to, and will have no problem settling in. He may even enjoy the feeling of familiarity.

- Being separated, possibly permanently, from loved ones and their previous life, including loss of powers, if applicable: He has no powers to lose, so that will not be a problem. He has experienced some aspects of the rest of it before. He thought he would never see Emma again, and he accepted this. Even though they hadn't been together before that point, and he wasn't sure they ever would be, he stayed faithful to the idea of her, not showing any interest in certain aspects of his former life. When his life changes in one way, he adapts and finds a new one. It's how he's survived for so long.

WRITING SAMPLES

SAMPLE ONE

He stalks out of Gold's shop, not caring how loudly the door slams or if some object undoubtedly stolen from an unwitting victim of the Dark One falls from a shelf and breaks. Gold has been toying with his life long enough without there being anything he could do about it, that now he'd welcome the opportunity to destroy even the tiniest corner of Gold's carefully-ordered life.

Which of course Gold anticipated, and tricked him into doing his dirty work. Now he can't even bring Gold down with him. Not without Gold bringing out that bloody tape and blaming it all on him. He doesn't understand how anyone can keep having anything to do with that man.

“One day, crocodile,” he mutters, his hand balling up into a fist. The newly-restored hook glints in the light, and at this moment he doesn't even care who hears him threatening Gold. “One day you will lose it all, and I will stand on your grave and laugh.”

He knows Gold has a plan – he must, he always does – and now he is more determined than ever to make sure that plan is never completed. “I don't know what you're up to, Dark One, but I will make sure that Emma stops you. Emma and all the rest. You don't get to win them all.”

He comes to a stop when he reaches the end of the dock where the Jolly Roger had been berthed until he gave her up to find a way back to this town. He reaches into the pocket of his jacket and removes the porcelain figurine he had swiped on his way out of the shop. He sets it down on the rough wood planking. “One day you will be the snail that is squashed.” As if to demonstrate to an absent audience, he brings his booted foot down on the figurine and smashes it into pieces, then sweeps the pieces into the harbor with his foot. He smiles grimly as the shards plop into the chilly water below. “Just like that.”

SAMPLE TWO

The water lapped gently at the sides of the boat as he steered it out of its slip at the dock. So many of the boats he'd “borrowed” lately had been the kind with motors, the kind that once he figured out how to make it go assaulted his senses with noise and a smell that ought not to get mixed up with the smell of the sea.

This one though, this one had a sail, an actual sail made of out canvas, and a mast and a rudder. It required a more delicate hand than the others.

He heard the flapping of the canvas in the wind and smiled to himself at the smell of the sea. The keel was light under his hand as he directed the craft to open water. He'd let it drift for a few hours before returning to the harbor.

The only place his truly felt this content was on the water, with the sun on his face and the smell of salt in his nostrils.

DISTRICT: Leisurebrook, on property overlooking the water
TYPE: Cafe/bar
NOTES: There's a nautical theme! Seriously, overloaded on the ship-related stuff here. The menu consists entirely of food that would have been eaten by sailors (don't worry, there's still fresh food and vegetables and stuff), and the employees all have job titles akin to the titles they would have on a ship's crew: since he's the owner/proprietor, he's the Captain (which he is anyway), the assistant manager is the first mate, whoever assists him with the ordering/books is the quartermaster, etc. The decor inside is entirely nautical themed as well, with porthole windows, anchors on the wall, pictures of ships and the sea, etc. Inside his office is a painting of a ship that viewers could swear is named the Jolly Roger, except that can't be because that's not a real ship. There's a sign hanging above the door that simply is painted wood, white letters on a black background: Liam's, with a painted anchor. The bar itself looks like the hull of a ship. There's a brick patio outside, with a few round tables, which will provide an excellent view of the sea when the weather is good. (Sample menu here. Still a work in progress.)

As much as he has always liked being on board a ship, sailing from once place to another, he has liked shore leave just as much. What's the point in going somewhere if you're not going to explore it? When he'd been a lieutenant in the navy, he'd used the time when the crew was off to ship to work on paperwork and setting things in order again. As a pirate, he'd made as much use of shore leave as the crew had. Usually to find some companionship.

This time he's brought the companionship with him. This could be the last time he and Emma get to enjoy a planet visit before they have babies on their hands.

He's removed his boots and left them on the beach. The cuffs of his pants are rolled up around his ankles, and his fingers are twined with Emma's, hand in hand, while they stroll along the edge of the water, the tide coming in and out around their feet.

"A planet covered in ocean? This is my kind of planet."

He's been missing the smell of the sea. The holodeck can't recreate that.

He has a tattoo in the inside of his right forearm: the name Milah, in a heart, with a dagger plunging through the heart. He keeps the tattoo covered by clothing.

He comes across as incredibly confident, with a great deal of bluster and bravado. The swagger is a facade, though, and when someone gets to know him better, he starts to let them see underneath that facade.

He ends up fluxing into New Dodge from the coronation party at Granny's, after he and Emma have their moment on the patio and soon after learn who it is that the brought back from the past with them. Landing in a strange place, that's nothing new to him, except that this time he didn't know he was going to one. He's relieved to find that Emma is there too, and a few other familiar faces, as well as a few Storybrooke people who are not. At least having some people in town who he knows help make the adjustment easier, and it doesn't take him long to decide to make things official with Emma and ask her to dinner.

He gets a job at the docks, as the cargo manager, because this is the job that most closely uses his skills from years of captaining a ship. He can put those skills to legitimate use, and it also is a way of meeting others in town when they have cargo coming through the docks.

A few weeks after he arrives in town, something happens that causes many of the residents of the town to turn into alternate versions of themselves. Gold has turned back into the pre-Dark One Rumpelstiltskin, cowardly and timid, and as Hook has also reverted to his earlier self, the one who wants nothing more than to kill the crocodile, he takes advantage of this and goes to Gold's home with the intention of killing him. Luckily Emma and Regina figure out what he's up to and are able to intercede. During this same event, when Hook is still his earlier self, he comes across Henry, also a recent arrival, who is acting like he's Peter Pan. Henry removes his heart and the hearts of two others and is planning on enacting a curse that would leave Hook dead in the process when the event ends right before this can happen. He goes looking for Henry to make sure Henry knows that he isn't angry and that he forgives him, and he even brings himself to apologize to for trying to kill him. This time.

Things are settling down and getting back to what passes for normal in this Old West-themed space town when a hurricane fluxes in the same way people do. He's in his office at the docks when it hits, and while the safest thing to do is probably to stay there, he can't just sit there and wait out a hurricane while he doesn't know what's happening to the people he cares about. He rushes out to help, sustaining a minor injury on the way, and when he realizes Emma's place of work has been hit, he hurries over to help, where he rescues her from the rubble and carries her to the clinic for medical attention, again sustaining an injury in the process. He barely leaves her side during her recovery process, and on the day she comes home from the clinic (which also happens to be her birthday), he shows up for dinner with her. This is also the day they decide to stay in town after their initial six months is up.

In the middle of November, when he's been there for about three and a half months, he and Emma take an overnight trip off-planet, for some time alone and to indulge his passion for ships and the fact that he misses his. During this trip, although they won't know it for awhile, she becomes pregnant. This will be the thing that defines their lives for the rest of their time in New Dodge.

Shortly before Christmas, Gold summons him to his shop and offers to return his hand to him. He's suspicious at first, because when has Gold ever done anything without demanding a price in return, but Gold assures him that he's asking nothing in return, and he reluctantly agrees. He's half expecting that at some point in the future Gold will want something in returns, but it never ends up happening. He keeps the hook, as a reminder of everything he's been through. He's been Captain Hook for so long that he can't part with the hook, even when he's trying to change the image others have of him.

It's in early January that Emma finds out she's pregnant, and as soon as she tells Hook, he suggests that they get married, and Emma agrees. He would have asked anyway, eventually. It's just that this has led him to ask sooner, because if they're going to have a baby, they should be married. He and Emma start making plans to build a house together, with room for Henry as well. They also need to tell the rest of her family about this, which makes him nervous, but luckily David and Henry handle it well.

A few weeks after this, he begins looking into starting his own business in town: boat rentals, because the largest body of water is a lake, and he misses being out on the water. He finds an investor, orders some boats, and has a rental office built. About a month after he starts this process, in early February, it opens for business. This is also around the same time that Henry leaves town and goes back to Storybrooke, which is hard on everyone, but particularly on Emma and Regina. Right after this Belle arrives, and he sets about making up for what happened between them in Storybrooke, and demonstrating that he's not the same as he was then.

In early March he and Emma move into the house that they built, with a nursery and plans of raising their family there, and a few days after that is their wedding. The whole town is invited, and the reception is held at the winery owned by Regina. This is the last major event that occurs while they are in town. After this, almost everything that happens is in some way preparing for the baby, or keeping Emma safe while there is some threat to the town. He experiences several instances of panic over impending fatherhood, but every time someone is able to calm him down again. The biggest flareup of this panic is at the discovery that they're actually having twins instead of just one baby like they thought, but David and the others are able to calm him down about this too.

By June he's in a good place in his life. He's only weeks away from being a father, which he's more excited about every day. He and Emma own several houses, because people left the houses to them when they left town, and his business is doing well. He is even planning on organizing a rowboat race tournament with prizes for the winners. All of this is sidetracked when he wakes up one morning to discover that Emma is gone. He can't find her anywhere, and he can't reach her over the network. He can only conclude that she's been sent back to Storybrooke.

Regina, Gold, Belle, David, Henry, they've all left too, over the months. He's got friends still, but his family is gone. For a week, he barely comes out of his house, or talks to anyone. It's during a conversation with someone else about her impending wedding that he comes to a decision. Leaving town means giving up everything, friends, business, property, but he's given up everything for Emma before. He has more of a chance with Emma if he goes back to Storybrooke than he does if he stays in New Dodge. He puts things in order, leaves instructions for what should happen to what he owns, and leaves town without saying goodbye.

↠ Personality: Even though he is a pirate and takes pleasure in everything that life brings him, he considers himself a gentleman. It's not like he was born a pirate, after all, and as such he has a code of honor that he follows though this code does get derailed quite a bit during his quest for vengeance. Even he has his limits. It was his brother's death that drove him to become a pirate; he realized that he could no longer serve a dishonorable king. He didn't adopt the lifestyle because it appealed to him. He even seems to hold in contempt those who focus simply on the baser aspects of being a pirate, such as Blackbeard.

Some might consider some of the things he does to be cruel, such as his treatment of Smee, but they're not. He has certain rules, and he expects those rules to be followed, by every member of his crew. They're like a family, and the actions of one reflect on the others. All of the loyalty that they give to him, he has earned, by being fair to the crew when he needs to be, and he returns that loyalty to them. When he made the decision to turn pirate, he gave every man on the crew the option to leave if they didn't agree, and every one of them stayed with him.

If he's betrayed, however, or his trust is broken, he will act quickly and without mercy. When Rumpelstiltskin killed the woman he loved, it took three hundred years for his anger to abate enough for him to be able to agree to a truce. That anger is still there though, bubbling just beneath the surface, for the justice that Milah never got and everything that Gold has going for him despite all that he's done.

He's not typically a violent person, but if he feels backed into a corner, he'll fight his way out. He can be patient, given the proper motivation, but generally if something bores him, he'll move on to something or somewhere else. He's the charming sort, able to talk (or flirt) his way out of just about anything. It is how he has survived for so long, after all. He's confident, some might say too confident, and he's got a bit of an ego. That ego never really goes away, but when he makes a meaningful connection with someone, he'll start to show them some of the pain underneath.

Sailing and the sea are his number one love, and without them he's at a bit of a loss as to what to make of his life. He wants a chance to start over, though, and to that end he is finding ways to redefine himself. He's been hurt or let down enough in the past that he doesn't trust easily, nor does he allow others to trust him easily. When he first meets someone, he comes across with a lot of bluster and swagger, but once he's determined that someone is worth his time, he'll start to let them see what's underneath that facade.

The first truly defining moment in his life was the death of his brother Liam. Liam was his captain, and his older brother, and the only family he had left in the world. Dealing with Liam's death would have been difficult under any circumstances, but it was even more difficult because not only did he lose his brother, he lost trust in the man he had sworn to serve. He found himself facing a difficult decision: continue to serve the man who had proven his dishonor and cost the life of someone close to him, or break the vow he had sworn. It's all about good form with him, and he decided that it was better form to refuse to serve a man who would deny his enemies a fair fight. In one moment he has lost his innocence and naivete and learned not to trust the world as a whole. It's a lesson he's still feeling the effects of all these years later.

He lost his adherence to good form after the death of Milah. He became driven entirely by his desire for revenge, and every decision he made was with the goal of achieving it. For all that time in Neverland, and up until the moment when he realized he hadn't gotten his revenge after all, he lost sight of who he truly was. He came to realize that getting his revenge wasn't worth his own life, and some of that was connected to Emma. He had slowly been discovering that there were things he wanted in his life again, and if he wasted it searching for revenge, he'd never get the things he truly wanted. This is the realization that gives him a new motivation for making decisions: Emma.

He takes action based on what's best for Emma, or on what Emma would want him to do. It might be the right thing to do, but he's not doing it to be a hero. He's doing it for Emma's sake. He doesn't even think of himself as a hero. He's a former villain who's trying to figure out what sort of man he is now. He hasn't quite figured it out yet, and he still struggles with the temptation to return to his old habits, but is able to get past them with a gentle reminder of everything he's got going for him now.

He starts to get some of his trust in the world back during his time in Storybrooke. He still doesn't trust Gold as much as the rest of the group seems to, but after Gold took the most important person from him and they've tried to kill each other multiple times, that's a rift that won't be repaired. He does put his trust in Emma though, and by extension the rest of her family, and Regina. It's a slow process, and while he's not sure he'd trust David or Mary Margaret to give any thought to his interests, he at least has figured out how to trust them not to let him die, even if this is because they wouldn't let anyone die, not because they'd go out of their way to save his life. He might not automatically trust anyone he meets, but he is trusting new people easier than he used to, and is getting better about earning their trust in return.

He had some success at this in New Dodge, where no one even knew he was a pirate until he had been living there for awhile and felt comfortable dropping hints. When no one judged him for this, or treated him any differently, he knew that he could have the kind of life he'd been wanting lately: settled in one place, with something anchoring him there. He even came to discover that he can be content with a land-based life, if he can find something that utilizes skills he gained over the years. The main result of his time in New Dodge is learning how to make friends, and most importantly how to trust others again. While he never fully repairs his relationship with Gold, in fact such a thing is impossible, he knows how to live in the same town as someone he hates without avoiding or provoking him, or letting his anger flare up at the slightest perceived insult.

In New Dodge he learns a lot about forgiveness. He can't forgive Gold until Gold asks for it, sincerely, and he's sure Gold means it, but in New Dodge he comes the closest he ever has before. The fact that Gold took Milah from him is still important, because it sent him down a bad path, but it's not as important as it used to be, and if it doesn't come up, he's content to let it lie on the back burner. It's always simmering though, and it still doesn't take much to bring it bubbling back up. His relationship with Regina is more easily mended, and the conflicts they've had are more easily forgiven. She's not as upset with him over the business with Marian as she is with Emma, and he's nothing but supportive of her, figuring he owes her that much after his hand in ruining her happiness. He has more of a struggle in connecting with Henry, which he thinks is important because of his involvement with Emma. He's willing to make the effort, and to do what is necessary to prove to Henry his commitment to Emma, but by the time Henry chooses to leave town, he's still not sure Henry has truly accepted his relationship with Emma, and he considers this the biggest disappointment of his time in New Dodge.

The most surprising development for him is after David shows up in town, with his son. He had never been sure how David felt about him, and in fact didn't think David liked him or the idea of him being with David's daughter. But David proves that wrong, accepting him as part of the family and trusting him not only with his daughter but also with his infant son. David's the one who talks him through it when he realizes what a major commitment it is to get married, and once the wedding is over he has no doubts that it was the right choice to make. He's ready to stop running from place to place, never staying too long, and he can make this work. David is also the one who supports him when he doesn't think he can handle being a father, and lets him practice with his own son. David has taken the place of the family he lost.

While in this town, he introduces himself as Killian Jones rather than as Captain Hook, not just because of the reaction he tends to get when he admits to being Captain Hook, but also because he sees this as his second chance, a better one even than Storybrooke because no one knows him here, and he wants to distance himself from his pirate history. After he attempts to kill Gold again, he's horrified not because he made the attempt but because he's trying not to be that man anymore. He's slowly making his way to becoming a man who not only does things because they're what Emma would want him to do, but because they're the right thing to do. He doesn't yet think of himself as a hero, but he's well on the way.

↠ Powers / Abilities: He has no magical or supernatural abilities, but is an excellent sailor and, by his own admission, "a hell of a captain". He can do everything one would expect from a ship captain in the Age of Sail: navigate using the stars, read charts, and he's skilled with a blade as well.

↠ Languages: He speaks English fluently.

↠ Reason for Playing This Character: I started playing him because even though he was a villain, he wasn't a bad person. He was angry and misguided and made bad decisions, but he was always redeemable. I wanted to explore some of the things about him that made him good despite being a villain, and watch him develop as a character and learn what sort of man he is now. He's still learning to overcome temptation and make good decisions, which has the potential to cause some problems in a city like this.

↠ What is Your Character's Sin?: While several of the sins might be applied to him, the one that he feels most keenly is Wrath. When he lost the woman he loved, he held on to his anger at the man who killed her for three hundred years. His only thought during that time was vengeance for what had happened to her, and it led him to make decisions and alliances that he might not otherwise have made. It took him thinking that he had gotten what he wanted to realize that he needed something other than anger-driven vengeance in his life. Even now he's driven to fits of anger, typically brought on by impatience or an imagined insult, but they are much milder in comparison to his quest for vengeance, when he felt nothing but anger.

SAMPLES

↠ First Person: [There's a bit of fumbling with the device at first. He'd mostly worked out how to use these sorts of things back in New Dodge, but he'd left that one behind. This one is different, and he hadn't expected to arrive in a place where he'd need one.

When he gets it working properly, the image that is revealed is of someone who is trying to hold it together, and barely succeeding. When he speaks, his words are very precise, very English, and tinged with more than a little upset and anger.]

This is not Storybrooke. I meant to be going back there. Someone has found it to their amusement to bring me here instead.

[The video moves in closer to his face.] I don't care where here is, and I don't even care who brought me here. I want to go back there, and I want to do it now.

[Things keep getting in the way of him being with Emma, and he's sick of it.]

↠ Third Person: He stalks out of Gold's shop, not caring how loudly the door slams or if some object undoubtedly stolen from an unwitting victim of the Dark One falls from a shelf and breaks. Gold has been toying with his life long enough without there being anything he could do about it, that now he'd welcome the opportunity to destroy even the tiniest corner of Gold's carefully-ordered life.

Which of course Gold anticipated, and tricked him into doing his dirty work. Now he can't even bring Gold down with him. Not without Gold bringing out that bloody tape and blaming it all on him. He doesn't understand how anyone can keep having anything to do with that man.

“One day, crocodile,” he mutters, his hand balling up into a fist. The newly-restored hook glints in the light, and at this moment he doesn't even care who hears him threatening Gold. “One day you will lose it all, and I will stand on your grave and laugh.”

He knows Gold has a plan – he must, he always does – and now he is more determined than ever to make sure that plan is never completed. “I don't know what you're up to, Dark One, but I will make sure that Emma stops you. Emma and all the rest. You don't get to win them all.”

He comes to a stop when he reaches the end of the dock where the Jolly Roger had been berthed until he gave her up to find a way back to this town. He reaches into the pocket of his jacket and removes the porcelain figurine he had swiped on his way out of the shop. He sets it down on the rough wood planking. “One day you will be the snail that is squashed.” As if to demonstrate to an absent audience, he brings his booted foot down on the figurine and smashes it into pieces, then sweeps the pieces into the harbor with his foot. He smiles grimly as the shards plop into the chilly water below. “Just like that.”

[It's a last ditch effort, Emma going to find this Lily and bring her to Storybrooke in the hope that somehow that can foil Gold's plan. Emma's going through a rough time right now, with everyone being so afraid that she'll turn dark at the slightest provocation, but he's the only one who doesn't overreact at the tiniest hint of something not particularly savior-like.

Which is why she asked him to come along on this trip. Also so that she could show him some of her world. Mostly because she trusts him to help keep her grounded, and understands that sometimes it isn't possible to be the hero all the time.

He'll keep her on track, even if some people might be reluctant to admit it sometimes.]

It's been a few hours since they pulled into the harbor in Milah's old village and she snuck into town to find Bae. He figured it was best for her to go alone to do the convincing, because his presence would just be overwhelming. He's dismissed the rest of the crew to shore leave, making sure to stress caution because they don't want to be drawing attention to themselves here.

He can't deny that he's nervous, not knowing what the boy will think, if he'll even agree to come. He finds himself pacing the deck, but trying to hide it behind a captain checking on his ship, because again the doesn't want to draw attention to anything happening here.

He wishes they would come back soon.

Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? He's still trying find a place for himself in town in canon, and the advantage of being in Ten Forward would be that he could rediscover more of himself without having to struggle against the label of being a pirate. He could also have some time to focus on his relationship with Emma without having to worry about all the interruptions that seem to happen in Storybrooke. He would also be forced to find a way to live peaceably in close quarters with a man he hates and would prefer never to set eyes on again.

“Come back to bed.” Milah's hand sleepily reached for him from the bed.

He was sitting by the fire, his bare feet stretched out to reach the heat of the crackling logs in the fireplace. This was one of their little indulgences, renting a room in a tavern when they were in port. Sometimes they'd even have enough extra coinage to afford a room like this, with its own fireplace in it.

He broke out of contemplating the flames to turn and look at her. “I thought you were asleep.”

“I was. I woke up because the bed was cold.” She climbed out of bed, clad only in her undergarments, and crossed the room to him. Her hair tumbled loosely over her shoulders as she settled herself on his lap. “You're thinking about him again, aren't you?”

By now she could read his moods and could tell what his silences meant. This particular brand of broodiness meant his thoughts were consumed by Liam's last moments, and what he'd think of turn his life had taken since. “You always can tell.”

“I know that look on your face. It's the one you always get when you think about him.” She ruffled his hair gently. “It's the only time I ever see you happy, remembering him.”

“I'm happy now too.”

She laughed and stood up. “Not as happy as you're going to be.” She grabbed his hand and tugged him after her to the bed.

Where she did indeed make him very happy.

The water lapped gently at the sides of the boat as he steered it out of its slip at the dock. So many of the boats he'd “borrowed” lately had been the kind with motors, the kind that once he figured out how to make it go assaulted his senses with noise and a smell that ought not to get mixed up with the smell of the sea.

This one though, this one had a sail, an actual sail made of out canvas, and a mast and a rudder. It required a more delicate hand than the others.

He heard the flapping of the canvas in the wind and smiled to himself at the smell of the sea. The keel was light under his hand as he directed the craft to open water. He'd let it drift for a few hours before returning to the harbor.

The only place his truly felt this content was on the water, with the sun on his face and the smell of salt in his nostrils.

Character: Captain Killian "Hook" Jones

History: Here.

Personality: Even though he is a pirate and takes pleasure in everything that life brings him, he considers himself a gentleman. He became a pirate for a reason, after all, and as such he has a code of honor that he follows. Even he has his limits. He's not the particularly violent sort, but if he feels backed into a corner, he'll fight his way out. He can be patient, given the proper motivation, but typically if something bores him, he'll move on to something or somewhere else.

He's the charming sort, able to talk (or flirt) his way out of just about anything (it's how he's survived for so long). He's confident, some might say too confident, and he's got a bit of an ego. He's a good leader, able to inspire loyalty in those who have served under him. He treats them fairly, and at the moment they're the closest thing to family he's got. He returns that loyalty to them. If he's betrayed, however, or his trust is broken, he will act quickly and without mercy.

Sailing and the sea are his number one love, and without them he's at a bit of a loss as to what to make of his life. He wants a chance to start over, though, and to that end he is finding ways to redefine himself. He's been hurt or let down enough in the past that he doesn't trust easily, nor does he allow others to trust him easily. When he first meets someone, he comes across with a lot of bluster and swagger, but once he's determined that someone is worth his time, he'll start to let them see what's underneath that facade.

Why do you think your character would work in this setting?

Going new places and meeting new people has been his life for so long. It's part of what he loves about his lifestyle. He's not afraid to explore new places. It's an adventure to him, and New Dodge is so unlike anywhere he's ever been before that the excitement of being in a new place will last longer than it would in someplace he already knows.

The inability to leave will chafe at him after the novelty wears off, but he's trying to start over and find a new direction for his life, and being forced to stay in one place will help with that. Not having everyone know his story already will help too, because they won't come into interactions with him expecting certain things to happen. This is a good chance for him to start putting down some roots, and if his life starts taking a turn for the better, he may decide to stay.

What will your character do for work?

Something down at the docks, or teaching some of the skills he has that would be appropriate for life in New Dodge (map making, navigation by the stars, etc.).

The clothes he's wearing: leather boots, leather pants, shirt, waistcoat, leather jacket; a satchel; a leather clasp embossed with the name Jones; a compass; a quadrant; gold coins that aren't valid as currency; a hook; a sewing kit for mending sails/clothing; a spyglass; a flask of rum.

Captain's Log

We washed up in the harbor of an unfamiliar town today, and it was providence that we did. The ship is in bad need of repairs, and the crew is restless. Our last skirmish with the navy nearly did us all in, but a few tricks of navigation rescued us from a sticky situation. The food and supplies we took off that band of Chinese pirates is nearly gone. The first order of business is to replenish supplies, then find someone to tend to the repairs we can't make ourselves.

It was bad enough to fare so poorly against the king's men, but then a storm came in out of nowhere and blew us off course for two days. Not only is this an unfamiliar town, the whole area is unfamiliar. I cannot reconcile what I see in front of me with any charts that I have in my possession. After everyone has had a rest, I must see what I can do about obtaining some charts for this area so that we can find our way back to where we came from.

The cook has also informed me that the damp from the storm has got into the few biscuits that remain and made them moldy. I expect we shall have to remain here at least two weeks.

[Isn't this just his lucky night. He was just out in town, wandering around, seeing what would happen, and he found himself a drinking partner. Maybe also a partner for a little more than just drinking. Which is something he's been waiting for for a long time, so he'll try not to mess this up.
